With this being our first class, we spent the time going over rules and expectations, as well as getting to know each other. We also talked about what the seven Sacraments are and that we will be receiving two of them this year. We talked briefly about Reconciliation and first Holy Eucharist.
The students decorated their Religious Education tins. These will be kept at the church until the end of the year. Each week they will add their saint cards to the tin. Throughout the year we will also make mini prayer books. It is my hope that once Religious Education class is over, that the kids will continue to look at their saint cards and prayer books. I hope that these tins will be something that the kids can use to deepen their faith at home.
Today we started learning about saints. Each week, we will have a saint of the day. This week's saint is Saint Frances Xavier Cabrini. You can find a copy of the saint card below.
St. Frances Xavier Cabrini (1850 – 1917)
St. Frances Xavier Cabrini was an Italian nun who founded the Missionary Sisters of the Sacred Heart of Jesus. Mother Cabrini wanted to go to China to spread the Gospel but the Pope asked her to go to America instead. Arriving in New York with six sisters, she started many orphanages, hospitals and homes for the aged. She eventually became a US citizen and was the first to be canonized. Mother Cabrini is the patron saint of immigrants. Her feast day is on November 13.
